About Tierra

TIERRA LEARNING CENTER is situated in Sunitsch Canyon, 320 acres on the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains of Washington State, about 5 miles from Leavenworth and 3 hours from Seattle. We are 45 minutes from the closest air service at Pangborn Memorial Airport, near Wenatchee, WA.
Sunitsch Canyon was home to one of the first homesteads in the Wenatchee valley which hosted the largest Holstein heard east of the Cascade crest and was the major seed potato supplier to the region. We’re dedicated to preserving the open and agricultural heritage of stewardship that comes with this land.
After various incarnations as a retreat center, youth camp and horse ranch, the property was purchased in 2001 and became the Tierra Learning Center. Through 2007, the staff and local community banded together to rehabilitate the land and rebuild and enhance the facilities while pursuing a mission to create a place where spirit and action connected by providing retreat space for organizations working towards social change.

In 2007, while remaining under the same ownership, the Tierra Learning Center was asked to redefine itself one more time with an emphasis on financial stability, stewardship of the land and an inclusive vision for people with developmental disabilities.
To meet these directives, the Tierra Learning Center re-focused its energy on the retreat center operations, now running the Tierra Retreat Center as a facility available to a wider clientele. The Tierra Learning Center also includes, within its community, Tierra Garden Organics – a prodigious and ambitious family run farm, Mountain Sprouts Preschool and Daycare – a full time, year round arts and nature based program housed in our historic barn, and is looking forward to developing the Tierra Village – long term housing and day programming for adults with developmental disabilities.
