Tierra Garden Organics

Tierra Organics 2009

One of the first sights driving into Tierra Learning Center is a 60 acre certified organic farm.

This will be the 4th year that the Garden is offering CSA shares to the community. The garden is steadily growing and is pleased to offer 30 shares for the 2009 season. CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) were created to support local agriculture. Small farmers have found that they are able to stay in business through the support of community members who purchase a ’share’ of the farm in advance of the season. This money helps cover the high initial costs associted with planting. The members then receives a weekly bounty of fresh produce for the remainder of the growing season.

What else is available at the farm? The farm is a space for reflection and relaxation. Guests of the retreat center are encouraged to tour the garden, take a seat under a fruit tree and read a book. Birds are common visitors with spring and early summer mornings being the best time to observe a variety of species. What else is available? This season the farm will offer fresh organic eggs available for $4.00 a dozen on a first come basis. The farm will also offer vegetable plant starts in the spring, cut your own flowers and pick your own strawberries. Additional produce is available for purchase on Fridays from 10AM-6PM.

Community Programs

As the garden has grown so have the possibilities for becoming involved with our community. We are now participants at the local farmers market in Leavenworth and supply produce to local vendors. One of the only organic producers to participate at farmer’s market, Tierra has been an example of the amazing produce that can come from a no-harm approach to farming. The farm is honored to be working with other growers in the area to increase access to local, sustainably grown, quality food. Increasing access includes supporting individuals in their attempt to grow food for themselves. Children are increasing found in the farm thanks to summer and school camps that bring them face to face with bugs and berries. Children are always welcome to come out and visit. The farm has a small play area with seating for busy parents. The farm also has vounteer and internship opportunities.

What does it mean to be a member? By joining the CSA you are agreeing to eat produce as it becomes available and while it is in season. The farm grows over 100 varierties of heirloom fruits and veggies including lettuce, spinach, mixed greens, peas, beans, cucumbers, winter and summer squash, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, broccoli, carrots, radishes, onions, leeks, garlic, potatoes, and much, much more. The shares cost $425 for 18 weeks. Each week will contain enough produce for 2 veggie loving adults or a typical family of 4.Eron_with_childrem06.JPG
