What is Community Supported Agriculture?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) were created to support local agriculture. Small farmers have found that they are able to stay in business through the support of community members who purchase a ‘share’ of the farm in advance of the season. This money helps to cover the cost of running the farm in the early season when production is at its lowest point of the year.
Why Join our CSA?
- You are directly supporting local agriculture and are receiving the freshest possible produce (other than growing it yourself!)
- You are receiving Certified Organic produce at an affordable price. We do not use synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides
- You are eating seasonally. The produce you receive is at its most flavorful because it is grown in season and harvested at its peak ripeness.
- You will expand your horizons. Perhaps you will try a new veggie or two or will discover new varieties of old standbys
- You are joining a community of others who appreciate and value great food!
What is included in a share?
We grow over 100 varieties of heirloom fruits and veggies including lettuce, spinach, mixed greens, peas, beans, cucumbers, winter and summer squash, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, broccoli, cabbage, beets, carrots, radishes, onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, potatoes, strawberries, rhubarb and many more. Shares are typically enough produce for an average family of 4 or 2 veggie loving adults.
We do our best to tailor the CSA to meet the needs of the families involved. Each year we send out a survey for you to tell us your likes and dislikes. This helps us to plant accordingly for the following year. If you are uncertain that you will be able to eat an entire share, try sharing your extras with friends, neighbors or family. They may love what you don’t!
Share Pick Up Options
Pickup On the Farm- Pickup is available on Wednesdays from 3- 6 PM at the Garden House located at Tierra Learning Center. All shares will be pre-boxed. We hope to provide more u-pick options for those who choose on farm pick-up.
Pick-up at Sage Mountain and Just Plain Grocery- Pick-up is available at Sage Mountain in Leavenworth or Just Plain Grocery in Plain. Pick-up will be on Wednesdays after 4 PM.
As there were difficulties in getting enough of our boxes returned each week, we will require all shares to provide at least 3 boxes, labeled with your name. They will only be used to box your share and will be returned to you at the end of the season.
The CSA Season
The Summer CSA will run for 18 weeks beginning on Wednesday, June 9th and will end on Wednesday, October 6th 2010. If you are unable to pick up your share at some point during the summer, you may have a friend pick up for you or we can donate your share to the Community Cupboard in Leavenworth. Just let us know in advance what you would like to do.
What does it mean to be CSA a member?
By joining the CSA you are agreeing to eat produce as it becomes available and while it is in season. We pledge to do our best to extend crop availability as much as possible given our climate. However, please do not expect tomatoes in June or peas in August. Sometimes there are crop failures. That is the risk of farming. But we will be sure that you as our customer receive the amount of produce you deserve with a reasonable amount of variation.
