There really is something about birding that brings people together. It's just... so cool! Everyone painted in their spring colors and the constant expectation of encountering the unknown or rare. This year at Tierra, after a build up of hovering Phoebe's, sun lit Tanagers, eye straining warblers, we came to the lodge area where our white headed woodpeckers are often seen. Suspense was high and we heard the chattering call - a few glimpses high in the tree. The group walked to the front area of the lodge, a few of us were strangling behind talking. The yellow bird fest flag was indeed flying right in front of the fir truck where a female came down. Suddenly we heard a cheer from the crowd - mating white headed woodpeckers right in front of everyone. Thanks to all who participated.
